Sometimes, in going over our pest control services in the Northeast Florida region, it’s helpful to talk a little bit about the average customer’s motivations, and how people request our services.

You can talk more generally about how we manage these types of pest control and we do – but getting more of a window into how people approach that process can help you think about managing any of these types of insect infestations at your property.

Ants

Much of the concern with fire ants (or other ant varieties) has to do with how these insects spread out and attack a living space.

In other words, it’s about those natural characteristics of ant populations – their community building and their proliferation in a certain area.

With some other insects, it’s easier to keep tabs on how many of them there are in your home or business property. But with ants, there’s the threat of a very rapid infestation, with enormous population growth on a very short timeline. And people feel overwhelmed and upset that they can’t control the infiltration of ants into their living areas.

So we’ll often talk to people about this in detail. What do you do to get rid of these ants for good?

Some of it involves time-tested scientific approaches based on research and development. So that’s where the professionals shine!

Flies

The deal with flies, simply, is that they’re seen as gross and unsanitary.

That’s a lot of what we talk about with customers who want this type of pest control.

Once again, there’s often an emotional component to it. People feel upset that they can’t get rid of an unsanitary pest that they feel might contaminate various things in their home, or lead to an overall impression of uncleanness. In fact, that’s what house flies have been known for since time immemorial.

But again, there are techniques and ways to get rid of these pests. We can help!

Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are, again, a very particular insect pest that people have very specific concerns about!

You don’t have to think too hard about mosquitoes to understand that much of the concern here is around dangerous illness. It’s not just the threat of malaria, which mosquitoes are known for in the third world. There are things like the zika virus and other diseases that can get transmitted through that process of mosquitoes zooming around and sucking human blood.

Regardless of how sensitive people are to mosquitoes or how attractive they are and how much they get bit, mosquitoes are very much an unwanted pest. Specialized techniques involve efforts to get rid of mosquitoes in an entire local area. We can discuss this in more detail with you on the phone or at your property. Ask about how our satisfied customers have been able to rid themselves of these and other major problems at their home – and what a relief it is!

Here at Pestology, we do a lot for local homeowners. Let’s talk a little bit about the basics, and you can think about what makes sense for your property.

Lawn Fertilization

Lawn fertilization is the process of applying nutrients to a lawn in order to promote healthy growth and maintain a lush, green appearance. Lawns need a balanced combination of nutrients, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, in order to thrive. These nutrients can be obtained through the use of fertilizers, which come in a variety of forms, including granular, liquid, and slow-release.

Weed Control

Lawn weed control is the process of preventing or eliminating weeds from a lawn. Weeds are plants that grow where they are not wanted, and they can compete with grass for nutrients and water. There are several methods for controlling weeds in a lawn, including the use of herbicides, hand-weeding, and mulching. We can help with all of this to get your lawn looking great!

Lawn Pest Control

Lawn pest or insect control involves preventing or eliminating insects that can damage a lawn or pose a threat to human health. Some common lawn insects include grubs, crickets and some kinds of ants. Insect control measures can include the use of pesticides, as well as natural methods.

Fungus Control

Lawn fungus control involves preventing or eliminating fungi that can cause diseases in a lawn. Fungal diseases can cause a variety of symptoms, including discolored patches, thinning grass, and wilting. Fungal diseases can be difficult to control, but measures such as the use of fungicides, proper watering and fertilization, and maintaining a healthy lawn through regular mowing and aeration can help prevent their development.

Wildlife and Your Lawn

In addition to these traditional lawn care practices, it’s also important to consider the impact of birds and rodents on a lawn. Birds can cause damage to a lawn by digging for insects or by dropping seeds that can grow into weeds. Rodents, such as moles and voles, can also cause damage by digging tunnels through the lawn. To prevent damage from birds and rodents, you can use bird netting, fencing, or repellents to discourage them from entering your yard. We can advise on the best ways to keep birds and rodents out!Talk to Pestology about how to get the best, nicest looking lawn in the NE Florida area. And if you have unwanted visitors in your home, maybe in an attic or crawlspace or somewhere accessible from the outside, you can call us, too! We deal with exterior and interior solutions, to keep your home safe and livable all year round. That’s a tall order, but it’s something that we excel at, with the right tools and resources to go to work for you.

Keeping a lawn healthy and appealing is far from easy. Homeowners have to invest time and money to avoid problems with their grass. If proper lawn care is one of your top concerns, then you need to be aware of the threat of pests. Ticks, grubs and chinch bugs can do a lot of damage to your lawn, which is why you need to keep them away from your grass.

Consumers spend millions of dollars annually to keep their lawns pest-free. Ideally, you want to take preventative measures to avoid this problem. Waiting until your lawn is overrun with pests to take action can be frustrating and expensive.

If you’re trying to keep your yard bug-free, consider the tips below.

1. Get Rid of Standing Water

When trying to wage war against common lawn pests, you need to realize the importance of removing standing water. Sources of standing water will attract lawn pests like mosquitoes. Identifying sources of standing water will require you to inspect the exterior of your residence. During this inspection, be sure to pay close attention to the condition of your gutters.

Clogged gutters allow a lot of water to accumulate at the base of your home’s foundation. Getting gutters cleaned a few times a year can help you avoid standing water issues. You also need to keep birdbaths and wheelbarrows around your home empty.

2. Mow Your Lawn Regularly

Overgrown grass can make the outside of a home an eyesore. Having overgrown grass can also make keeping insects away nearly impossible. Common lawn pests like ants and ticks will use overgrown grass to hide. Instead of allowing overgrown grass to become a cover for insects, you have to cut it regularly.

If you don’t have the time needed to perform this essential lawn maintenance, you need to seek out some professional help. With the help of professionals, you can keep your lawn looking great all year long.

3. Don’t Let Leaves Accumulate on Your Lawn

Fall foliage provides a somewhat dull landscape with a blast of color. Some homeowners think that allowing leaves to accumulate on their lawns is a good idea. In reality, making this mistake can make controlling lawn pests difficult. This is why you need to rake leaves and remove them from your lawn routinely. The time and effort invested in removing these leaves will be worth it in the long run.

4. Working with Professionals is a Must

If you start to notice signs of a lawn pest infestation, you need to take action immediately. Using the chemicals you find at your local hardware store to address this common issue can be disastrous. The best way to ensure lawn pests are removed properly is by working with professionals. The professionals at Pestology have the experience and tools needed to eliminate lawn pests in a hurry.

As you can see, there are many things you can do to keep your yard bug-free.

What do lawn care and pest control have in common?

It’s a great question to ask the folks at Pestology because we deal in both. We see how people struggle with some of these issues if they haven’t called the right service companies to help them set up actionable plans to keep creepy crawlers at bay and cultivate nice, lush yard spaces.

Grub Control

Grub larvae can do a number on your lawn. They’re also technically an insect population. They’re not likely to infest your house, but they will eat your grass and cause unsightly outdoor patterns.

Our grub control products are expertly rated and certified for controlling these larval nuisances. In that way, it’s sort of similar to some of our best pest control products that work on things like roaches, bedbugs, ants etc. Trying to remediate a property fully means being thorough, working according to scientific realities, and being authentic as a company that knows what it’s doing.

Companies that make these pest control products have to do their research and development to innovate. Companies that use these pest control products for pest control services have to also do their research and development and use these items properly as intended.

We can set up a cultivated household plan for you to work around problems that you have with insects or anything else. That’s partly based on knowing how these types of services intersect. It’s also based on investing in the right teams, the right tools and the right techniques, to really excel at these types of work. That’s a big source of assurance to their customers.

Outdoor Weed Control

We also combine the aspect of outdoor pest control with outdoor weed control, so that you get the right combination of pesticides and herbicides and other materials to cultivate good landscaping safely without harm to your pets or children. Read more on the web site about our services in this area, and ask us any questions about the formulations that are best for your lawn.

Safe and Sanitary

The core goal in both of these types of work is to get environments to the best condition that they can be. That’s safe, clean, sanitary and livable conditions.

People who are experiencing insect infestations are often under pressure and feeling like they can’t sustain that ideal. People who have out-of-control long growth and shabby outdoor areas may or may not feel that way, too.

That’s part of our approach to provide professional assistance with both of these areas, and consult with our clients to offer them the best customer service available in the Northeast FL area. Don’t simply wing it when it comes to choosing a service firm to deliver excellent landscaping and pest control results.

Keeping your lawn in pristine shape is a lot harder than it seems. If you want the grass around your home to stay looking great, then investing in things like lawn aeration and pest control is a must. One of the worst problems you can encounter as a homeowner is grass fungus.

If you are like most homeowners, you spend a lot of money on routine lawn care annually. Instead of allowing this investment to be in vain, you need to work on keeping lawn fungus away. Below are some things you can do to avoid lawn fungus problems.

Aerating Your Lawn is Important

A low level of thatch can deliver nutritional benefits to your lawn. However, if this build-up gets out of control, it will prohibit water from getting to the grassroots. The longer this problem persists, the harder it will be to avoid a broad array of fungus-related problems. Rather than dethatching your lawn and damaging the crown of your grass blades, you need to invest in aeration.

The tiny holes poked into your lawn during this process will allow moisture to get to your root system. By getting the right amount of hydration and nutrients, your grass will be able to thrive and ward off fungus.

Don’t Forget To Water Your Lawn in the Morning

Grass that is wet overnight creates the perfect environment for lawn fungus. Several grass diseases rely on wet foliage to both spread and reproduce. This is why being mindful of when your grass is watered every day is important.

Ideally, you want to water your grass before 10 a.m. By doing this, you can hydrate your lawn without allowing it to get too damp. Strategically watering your lawn is a crucial part of keeping grass fungus away.

Routine Fertilization is Crucial

One of the main things a lawn needs to stay healthy is routine fertilization. A perfectly balanced fertilization treatment provides grass with the nutrients it needs to combat fungus. Using too much or not enough fertilizer during these treatments can have a negative effect on your lawn.

The best way to figure out what type of fertilizer your grass needs is by testing your soil. Allowing professionals to perform this test and the subsequent fertilization is a good idea. They will have the tools and experience needed to get this work done properly.

Be Smart When Mowing Your Grass

Cutting your grass too short is a horrible idea. Making this mistake usually leads to the development of fungus on your grass. This is why you need to set your mower blades a bit higher. By doing this, you can protect grass roots and keep your lawn looking healthy. If you don’t have the time needed to mow your lawn, then hiring an experienced professional to perform this job is a wise move. With this professional help, you can keep your grass green and healthy.

Are you due for a lawn fertilization treatment? If so, Pestology is here to help.

The condition of your lawn is one of the first things people will notice when passing by your residence.

Homeowners are willing to spend billions of dollars annually to keep their lawns looking great. This money is usually spent hiring landscaping professionals. One of the worst things you can have on your lawn is noticeable weeds.

Below are some weed control mistakes you need to avoid to keep your lawn looking great.

1. Accidentally Spreading Seeds

Some homeowners think that all they need to do to rid their lawns of weeds is run over them with a lawn mower. While this might make the weeds in question blend in with the rest of the landscape, this mistake can come back to haunt you. As you mow over the weeds on your lawn, you will inadvertently spread seeds everywhere.

This will result in the weed problem in question getting much worse. Instead of running over your weeds with a mower, you need to stop them at the root. By working with the team at Pestology, you can get a handle on your weed problem.

2. Waiting Too Late In the Seasons To Take Action

Procrastination is a problem that the average person deals with. Waiting to address the weeds you discover while mowing is a horrible idea. Once the weeds are visible, they are capable of spreading seeds. When this seed-spreading process occurs, your weed problem will get much worse.

Ideally, you want to start addressing your weed problem in early spring. This will allow you to get the results you are after by the time colder weather moves into your areas.

3. Hand Pulling Weeds is Ineffective

Many homeowners get quite a workout trying to remove the weeds in their yard by hand. You will be unable to completely remove the weeds in question. In most cases, the weeds you pull will come back when it rains.

Instead of breaking your back attempting to pull weeds by hand, you need to pursue more effective methods of weed control. Modern methods of weed control are both safe and effective, which is why they are a great investment for homeowners.

4. Trying to Get Rid of Weeds Without Professional Help

For the most part, the average homeowner knows very little about lawn care. This lack of knowledge will get in the way of progress when attempting to remove weeds from a residential lawn. Investing in the wrong chemicals can lead to your lawn getting damaged.

You can avoid these mistakes by finding an experienced professional to help you out. With the right professional guidance, you can rid your lawn of weeds and restore the appeal it has lost. Now that you know more about common weed control mistakes, it is time to take action. By avoiding these mistakes, you can get your lawn back in pristine shape quickly.

Let’s face it: the outdoors takes a lot of maintenance.

The inside of your property needs constant care and supervision – routine cleaning, deep cleaning, repairs and various long-term fixes – but the exterior of your property needs a lot of these things, too, and sometimes it can seem downright overwhelming.

Why do people call professional lawn and garden experts to come work on their properties?

Let’s talk about a few of these issues…because this ties into what we do and how we work closely with property owners in the area.

Playing

Your little ones often don’t want to play outside when there are a lot of bugs and other issues to deal with.

Professional remediation and pest control services help in this regard, and some of our other lawn and shrub services do, too.

We want to help you get more out of your property each day as you live in your home.

Hosting

When you have overgrown landscaping, or bugs, you just don’t feel as much like hosting various events.

But that’s part of your property value, too – to be able to confidently get people together to enjoy the outdoors in any season.

In fact, that’s part of the problem for some people: that they want to host in the summer when they have these problems, and they need help. Hosting in the winter just isn’t the same!

So we provide that key service to get the exterior in good condition for showing off to visitors in the temperate seasons.

Property Value

When your exterior is maintained, you have a better property value. That doesn’t mean you can’t change the equation later – but generally, as you keep up with property issues, you keep that curb appeal and higher property value in your back pocket in case you’re looking to sell.

Modern Methods

We bring modern methodology to lawn care, shrub care services and pest control. We are one of the top firms in the Mobile, Alabama area and ready to go to work on your behalf tackling whatever your lawn and exterior needs.

Ask us about special offers and the work that we have done with so many homeowners and business owners in the Mobile area. We are one of the firms that people call most often when they are looking at the exterior and wondering how to fix certain long-term problems. We are here and ready to go to work for you!

How do you keep your lawn in perfect condition?

It’s a question many homeowners ask themselves as they look out soulfully throughout the summer heat and see a lawn that might be ailing in more ways than one – inundated with invasive species, or browned from the sun, or partially destroyed by creepy crawlers.

The reality is that the exterior of your property really is vulnerable to different kinds of threats. That’s important to know about when you’re the one responsible for things looking good in the spring, through the summer, and on into fall. Without that key knowledge, you’re sort of at a disadvantage.

Insects

Different types of insect pests can really do a number on your lawn and your landscaping.

Certain types of insects are made to munch on the things that you plant in your backyard.

Other types of insects can be harmful to your green grass.

A good company has to know what to deal with, and what to leave behind. Professionals put a lot of research and training into giving you the best solutions for your outdoor areas. We can explain more as we do a custom evaluation of your lawnscape and provide you with information about what you have going on.

Plant Threats

If you’re like many of us who have to maintain green areas around a property, you’ve seen how various kinds of plants encroach on your neatly manicured lawn.

Mulberry trees are one that comes to mind – different types of thistles and quick-growing junk tree species are also different types of vegetation that can threaten to take over your outdoor space. These can really be annoying!

Dealing with these types of intruders means a particular strategy related to natural earth and how things progress throughout a growing season.

Fungus

That’s right, even certain types of fungus can detract from your lawn’s perfect and neat appearance.

So now let’s talk about how to mitigate all three of these threats together.

Hire Pestology for green lawn service that merges a lot of horticultural knowledge with a commitment to safe and effective green landscaping.

Our technicians can explain to you in detail how we use specialized methods and resources to keep your property looking good without resorting to harmful chemicals and sprays. It’s part of our mandate around Clay and St. John’s counties, as a top provider of lawn care services that can’t be beat.

Lush, green lawns don’t just happen on their own; a lot goes into keeping turfgrass healthy. Turfgrasses are hardy; they require specific nutrients throughout the growing season to keep them in optimal condition. The soil, water, and sun all provide certain nutrients for turfgrass, but adding fertilizer to your lawn will ensure the grass receives the right balance of nutrients to stay green and healthy. Take a look at why fertilizer is such an essential part of lawn maintenance.

Fertilizer Fills In Gap Of Nutrients

Fertilizer contains nutrients that promote the healthy growth of turfgrass. Grass can lose these nutrients through leaching, grass clippings removal, and ammonia volatilization. Fertilizing your lawn ensures that the vital nutrients of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are replaced and remain in a healthy balance for your yard.

Vital Nutrients In Lawn Fertilizer

*Nitrogen: Nitrogen is the nutrient that gives turfgrass its green color. Nitrogen also helps the grass-grown thick, which encourages denser shoots and less room for weeds. While nitrogen is an essential nutrient for healthy grass, too much of it can weaken the grass, making it vulnerable to disease, leaching, and pests.

*Phosphorus: Phosphorus stimulates grass growth, encouraging the establishment of healthy roots. A healthy root system is vital for grass to weather periods of drought. Healthy roots also ensure that your lawn will stay in good shape throughout the changing seasons.

*Potassium: Potassium is crucial for healthy grass as it strengthens cell walls, helping grass resist disease, drought, fungus, and wear from foot traffic and other use. Potassium also keeps grass safe from harm during extreme weather conditions.

Preventing Weed Growth And Reducing Patches

Regularly fertilizing your lawn helps it to maintain strong roots. Strong roots quickly absorb more water than unhealthy roots, which is critical for many reasons. When water is absorbed efficiently, the soil around the grass becomes firm, reducing the likelihood of water pooling and weed growth. Thick grass with strong roots chokes out weeds by preventing them from gaining a foothold and growing.

Fertilizing Your Lawn Helps Prevent Pest Infestations.

A healthy, well-fertilized lawn encourages a healthy ecosystem of microorganisms, earthworms, and pest-eating bugs, reducing garden bugs that feast on unwanted insects. The better your lawn’s health, the more it can withstand damaging insects and keep dangerous infestations at bay.

Talk With A Professional About Your Lawn

When it comes to maintaining a healthy, lush lawn, it is always a good idea to talk with a professional to determine your landscape’s needs. Through regular fertilization and pest management as needed, you can keep your turfgrass healthy and your landscape beautiful.

St. Augustine grass is a fast-growing, dense, coarse grass ideal for humid, warm climates. Because rainfall can vary throughout the year, the watering strategies must be adjusted to ensure the grass receives sufficient water without being over or underrated. Turf dieback and disease are common issues of soggy, overwatered lawns. You can determine the amount of water your St. Augustine grass needs by observing your yard and evaluating your soil.

Pro tip: You should water your St. Augustine grass if you notice it changes from a dark green color to a gray-blue shade. Also, if you planted it in clay or sandy soil, it should be watered more often.

When to Water Your St. Augustine Grass

Rainfall varies quite a bit in each region. Because of this, the frequency you will need to water your St. Augustine lawn depends on your own visual observations. In fact, looking at your lawn is one of the best ways to determine how often it should be watered. As mentioned above, if the grass starts to look a gray-blue color, then it needs water.

The blades will also begin to bend over when more water is needed. This is done to conserve as much water as possible. If half of your yard starts to show these issues, it’s a good idea to water all your grass. However, you can also overwater your St. Augustine Grass. If you notice that your lawn is squishy, wilted, or the water isn’t being absorbed well, you are overwatering. Another sign of this is if fungus begins to grow. If this happens, you also need to call the professionals for treatment.

Consider the Soil Moisture Depth

Usually, for St. Augustine to grow and stay healthy, the soil has a six-inch top layer that remains moist. This type of deep moisture helps ensure the roots grow down, ensuring the grass will be well-established in the soil. You can use a soil moisture probe or even a wood stake to see how deep the moisture depth goes.

If you notice the probe is dry above the six-inch depth marker, then your lawn needs more water. You should evaluate your soil like this frequently to make sure your lawn is watered properly.

Type of Soil in Your Lawn

Along with the factors above, watering frequency is also dependent on the type of soil in your yard. Sandy soil provides more drainage, but it won’t store water for the roots to be established. It’s good to water your St. Augustine grass in sandier soils to ensure it has the moisture needed.

Keeping Your St. Augustine Grass Healthy and Growing

If you want to ensure your St. Augustine grass stays healthy and continues to grow, it is good to learn how and when to water it. The tips and information here will provide you with this information and help you ensure your lawn looks great throughout the year.
